June 2000
The
past month has been notable for several high-profile competitions, including the
Vice-Captain's 36-hole event, spread over two weekends, the Lady Vice-Captain's
Day, the Millennium Seniors Open, the
Veterans Trophy, a Ladies Open three-ball Alliance, and the Hyde's Open.
And
while congratulations are due to all the prizewinners, whose exploits are
recorded in these pages, Wedge's sincere thanks go to the ladies who helped make
these events so successful by handing out scorecards, acting as spotters at the
tricky third hole, dispensing drinks, selling raffle tickets, and generally
making themselves extremely useful.
The
seniors' section expressed their gratitude by donating œ50 to the ladies'
committee.
Many
thanks ladies.
Vice-Captain
Bill Waterhouse provided a glittering array of prizes for his big event of the
year, with David Rhodes taking home a handsome canteen of cutlery after a
two-round net score of 129 - seven under par.
Runner-up
was veteran Tom McNamara, two shots adrift.
The
prize for the best gross score of 145 went to young Saul Slater, who edged out
John Yemm on a card play-off.
The
first division winner in the first round, played on Sunday, June 11, was Adrian
Brierley, who beat Tony Roddy on a CPO.
Joe
Smith came out top in the second division, beating Muhktar Hussein, again on a
countback.
The
second round was played on the following Saturday, with Chris Stanley taking the
first division honours and Paul Walker just pipping Joe Swindells for the second
division prize.
Jim
Maloney, former area sales manager for the Manchester Evening News, made news
himself by winning the Veterans' Trophy - a
board comp. - with a score of 86-22-64.
Jack
Cooper (88-21-67) was runner up, beating Alan Garner with a better back nine.
The
general medal round which was played simultaneously was won by David Bland
(81-16-62) from Chris Cordwell (78-15-63).
Following
their 8-0 trouncing of Hanging Heaton in the Lawrence Batley League, our Seniors
notched up two more whitewashes in their home matches against Marsden and
Bradford Moor.
Heroes
against Marsden were Bob Butterworth, Cliff Fletcher, Albert Kingham, Roy Last,
Terry Marner, Arnold Parker, Arnold Sykes, and Ray Edwards.
The
men too hot to handle for Bradford Moor were Ross Rosengrove and Brian Hope;
Doug Owen and Cliff Fletcher; Neil Pickering and Adrian Brierley; and Arnold
Sykes and Alf Selby.
Our
men also beat Silkstone 6-2 at home but were
less successful in two fixtures against top-of-the-table Dewsbury, drawing at
home and losing 7-1 away. At the time of writing, Werneth are lying second.
The
Millennium Seniors Open, offering a prize on every hole, attracted 144 entries -
and made a profit of œ415.
The
condition of the course was highly praised by visiting competitors and it is
expected there will be an even bigger entry next year.
First
prize in the better-ball Stableford event went to D. Conway and B. Rowbottom, of
Crompton and Royton, with a splendid score of 48pts.
Second,
five points adrift, were R. Johnson and B. Schofield, of Springfield Park, with
Werneth's Gordon Emery and Arnold Parker settling for third place on a CPO.
The
Golden Oldie prize for the pair with a combined age of 140-plus went to our own
Doug Owen, who is a sprightly 80, and Gordon Lockett, who is nobbut a lad by
comparison. They scored 39pts.
Oldham's
L. Sharpe and B. Radcliffe, with 42pts won the section for pairs with a combined
age of between 130 and 139 years.
Six
Werneth members won prizes on individual holes - Joe Smith, Jack Hulley, John
Stockley, Terry Marner, Alan Garner, and Brian Taylor.
Lady
Vice-Captain Barbara Whiting was blessed with fine weather for her big day - and
Yvonne Edwards turned up the heat on the rest of the field with a score of
85-20-65 to take first prize, with Fiona Dooley (76-9-67) in second place.
Also
celebrating was secretary Heather Lockett, who has become engaged to boyfriend
Richard Jeffreys.
Blistering
heat greeted competitors in the Ladies Open Threeball Alliance, won by Marilyn
Griffin, Lynne Kershaw (Oldham), and Dorothy Nicholson (Crompton and Royton).
The
LGU medal and Grandmothers Trophy went to Sheila Whittingham, June Fletcher
amassed 40pts to win a Stableford comp.,
and Sylvia Haq, with a score of 5-up, triumphed in a bogey competition.
Home
advantage proved decisive in the Hyde's Open with Werneth members featuring in
the first seven prizewinning places.
Winners
were Tony Broomhead and A. Thornton (Saddleworth), with Duncan Hough and A.
Goodall second. Dominic
Grimes and H.Kelly (Brookdale) captured third place on a CPO from Roger Buckley
and Grahame Holt.

Steve Rimmer and M. Roscoe.
Congratulations
to Paul Rowbotham on becoming the third member of Wedge's Millennium hole-in-one
club. He joins Ian Briscall and Paul Ashton.
